Core Courses

Core courses comprise the basic structure for the fundamental development of your MBA program of study.  Successful completion of all core courses is a requirement for your MBA. *Courses are subject to change

Term 1: September - December

MBA 803.3 Business and Society
Through hands-on application of critical aspects in today's dynamic environment such as corporate governance, competitive contexts, innovation, business ethics and corporate social responsibility, students develop the skills needed to analyze, formulate and implement firm strategy.  This course is fundamental to understanding how business works and is an introductory course for the Edwards MBA. organization of creating an effective financial reporting strategy will also be examined. The course will also expose students to future trends in financial reporting, both national and international.

MBA 813.3 Strategic Human Resources Management
Discusses the linkage between organizational strategy and human resources to achieve fit between the two. Students study fundamental concepts, with best practices to current management situations.

MBA 829.3 Financial Statement Analysis
The financial statement analysis course will prepare future managers to effectively analyze, interpret and evaluate an entity's financial statements and related information. The entities subject to analysis will be from a number of different industries which will enable a variety of accounting and financial issues to be explored.

MBA 819.3 Marketing for Organizational Decision-Making
Focuses on the role that marketing plays within an organization and how it integrates into organization decision making. Applicable to both for profit-oriented companies and not-for-profit organizations, covered includes the innovative and imitative processes used to create a superior value-creating firm and the management and strategic processes whereby products and services are developed, priced promoted and distributed.

MBA 889 Integrative Module
This is a case based course with 5 cases in total each worth 20%.  No final exam is required.

Term 2: January - April

MBA 825.3 Financial Management
Examines the role of finance in business decision-making. Emphasis is placed on developing knowledge of theories, concepts, and analytical techniques used in business finance. Students will begin to view finance as an integral part of business and learn that all business decisions involve some form of financial analysis.

MBA 846.3 Entrepreneurship and Business Planning
Provides concepts and tools to successfully develop and manage all components of a strategic business plan. Students will assess business plans from the viewpoint of entrepreneurial proponents as well as venture capital investors.

MBA 865.3 Accounting for Planning, Decision-Making & Operations
Introduces students to the vital roll that management accounting information plays in today's economy.  Information used by managers for planning and decision-making is often different from the information used by creditors, investors and others outside the organizations. Provides a foundation for understanding the operations of both service and manufacturing organizations, including the activities related to the production of goods and services as well as the improvement of key business processes.  Demonstrates the tools, principles and analytical techniques used by operations decision makers. 

MBA 870.3 Corporate Finance
Knowledge of finance concepts, theories, and analytical tools are very important to the manager in today's competitive marketplace. Those that master the skills and knowledge of finance will be able to make sound economic investment decisions, finance projects with confidence, and manage their firm's assets and liabilities more effectively. In this course, emphasis will be placed on measuring cash flows, valuing assets and investments, measuring risk and required returns, financing and structuring deals, and managing operational assets. Organizations studied will range from private entrepreneurial enterprises to large public corporations.

MBA 877.3 Leadership & Organizational Dynamics
The role of a manager requires organizing, controlling, planning and motivating others to perform the work of the organizations.  The course examines articles, cases, novels, illustrations, and discussion to appreciate the totality of leadership. Students develop and hone their personal leadership philosophies. Focuses on the social forces within organizations and examines how they affect office politics, power in organizations, organizational culture and organizational change

Term 3: May - June

MBA 878.3 International Business and & Global Marketing
Intended to provide an opportunity to understand the complexity of the global environment of business, and make an attempt to systematically examine the broad dynamics of the international environmental factors that would potentially influence business activities of the firm. This would include demographic trends, economic development, natural and resource concerns, political landscape, and cultural diversity.

MBA 880 International Study Tour
Designed to enhance the classroom curriculum by providing first-hand exposure to the business culture of a chosen country.  Includes company visits, discussions with Canadian trade officials, and cultural awareness activities.  Students learn how a global economy functions and how executives build stronger companies through engaging in the global marketplace.

MBA 881.3 Mergers, Acquisitions & Negotiating for Business
This course will cover a variety topics relating to mergers, acquisitions and corporate turnaround situations. The class will apply tools relating to performance measurement, risk management, strategy implementation, business negotiations, and corporate governance. The class will make extensive use of discussions, cases, exercises and other pedagogical aids to convey the course content

Term 4: July - August

MBA 828.3 Tactical Strategy
Strategic management is that set of decisions and actions which leads to the development of an effective strategy to help achieve corporate goals and objectives.  Serving as the capstone course of the Edwards MBA, this class will use performance measurement and risk management tools to maximize the benefit of the organization's strategic choices, integrating concepts learned in the program.

MBA 992.3 Management Consulting Project
Will lead students through the management consulting process, including developing and presenting a consulting proposal and completion of the project.  Industry business clients are expected for each consulting project, and may include a student's employer, but exceptions may be made for students who wish to research their own business enterprise.  This course is a core component of the Edwards MBA, integrating a cross-section of business concepts and application.  Developing the proposal, carrying out the work plan, analyzing the results, drawing conclusions, formulating recommendations, drafting the final consulting report, and working with the business client ensures that students have experience in project management through every step.
